Also Apple have announced that the iPod and iPod photo lines are merging, now all iPods will feature color displays with the ability to view album artwork, photos and play slideshows in color. The simplified iPod lineup features a 20GB model, holding up to 5,000 songs priced at just €319 and a 60GB model, holding up to 15,000 songs priced at €449.

For each person who arrives to get the update they will be wondering what the podcasting icon is all about. iTunes embracing podcasting means that more people can and will hopefully be subscribing to podcasts.

Subscribing to an episode or podcast fast is a very easy process, go to the music store under genre choose Podcasts and select your favourite podcasters. You will now be shown details of the podcast, a link to their website and how many available episodes they have. Here you can just pick certain episodes or subscribe to the feed.

On the Podcast homepage you can select publish a podcast if you want to manually insert to our feed.

The first major podcatcher for the MAC will soon be released under beta for Window users.

It’s been a deep dark secret for some time now, but we can finally announce that a Windows version of iPodderX is on its way! So not only will iPodderX run on Intel on the Mac OS, it will also run on Intel or AMD on your PC.

But the problem is by that time iTunes 4.9 should be available as the latest update. Most iPod users will automatically switch from their current podcatchers to iTunes. But it is great to finally she that iPodderX will be switching to Windows.

Firstly Tom’s podcast is a great idea for the blind people not only around Ireland but around the world. They get to listen to Tom’s blog without needing assistance. All they need to do is get someone to subscribe to the items that interest them (from tagged items or categories) and they can conneted their iPod each day and get the latest updates.

Secondly it’s great to see the Irish grabbing a hold of podcasting and getting their voice out on the Internet. We now have 6 Irish podcasters who have gone through the whole experience and for podcatchers in Ireland it’s great to hear some homemade talent.

There is already 70 mentions of Ireland in the podcast feeds which have been included in Odeo. Adding your podcast feed is a very easy process and you can tag it with any amount of keywords.

Once logged in I quickly began to feel at home; Doppler, iPodder and Nimiq became a distant memory, Odeo is seen as a way to bring podcasting into the ears of the average Internet user. I had already seen screenshots of Odeo appear on Flickr but having full access meant I could fully interact and test it out for myself.

Firstly the colours/layout of the main page is excellent. Because Odeo is simply for listening/syncing and creating that’s what it sticks to. The main navigation appears just under the Odeo logo, just underneath it features 4 podcasters, in this area you can listen to their latest podcast/view their image and click to see their information.

Just underneath is the hottest podcasts currently being listened too with details of the amount of shows they have/comments they have received and subscribers they currently have. Below this is the latest news section which features articles relating to Odeo.

The right hand column features the most important information on the page. It offers the options to search through podcasts, browse the most popular podcasts and the latest entries. Tagging is becoming more and more information for bloggers thanks to Technorati, Odeo allows you to submit your RSS feed and tag it how you see it.

For Listeners there will be a vast directory with gathered data from your friends to suggest podcasts you may be interested in.

For Podcasters they will be offering free hosting and also make podsafe music available to you for inclusion in your show.

For Musicians they offer the chance to submit their music for podcasters to use in their shows.

A podcast is a recorded item, it can range in any length and be about anything. You can record your own podcast via your mobile phone, a minidisc or direct from your computer.

Podcasting is the process of uploading your completed podcast and posting it onto your website. If you don’t have a website just log on to blogs or blogsome for a free website.

Once you post the location of the podcast file. It will be inserted into a RSS file. The RSS file allows people to copy the link and paste it into a podcatcher which will automatically download these shows at set times. So people can sync up their MP3 player and listen to your recording on the move.

One-Click subscription describes the method of subscribing to a podcast RSS feed by just clicking a link in a web page. An application installed on the user’s computer will be invoked by the user’s web browser when the link is clicked. The application is then able to add the selected podcast feed to the user’s subscription list.

Just like PodFas, PodBrix sells modified minifigs inspired by the popular ad campaign for portable music players. Moving on from the minifigs Timi produced a great t-shirt for use with the iPod Shuffle with a magnetic attachment. This quickly sold out and soon after he launched PodShirt which sells for $29.

A new podcasting site, BritCaster, is calling itself “the hub of UK podcasting”. The site features non-commercial UK podcasts, and all Britcaster podcasts are available via an aggregated feed.

Maybe the podirish site should become the home for Irish podcasters to sign-up, post and upload their podcasts.

The only problem is the amount of domains relating to this which have been purchased.

jobcast.com, jobcasting.com, podjob(s).com to mention just a few.

This is a very useful tool as every artist on the site now has a free podcast, where listeners can receive new songs (and other audio messages), gig listings, and news posted by the artists.

Jenna Drey is one such artist who is now playing on my iPod after I easily downloaded her songs all at once.

Podish involves Irish people embracing podcasting without having to pay to upload their items, all they need is their mobile phone. The mobile allows people to easily record an item/issue in the news that they want to express their opinion on, or maybe be adventurous and interview somebody or do a sound seeing tour of their town area. The possibilities are endless.

Podish is an open forum where you can speak your mind about any issue. All you need to do is grab your mobile phone… speak your mind and send it as a MMS to podish@gmail.com.

I want to keep the folk music tradition alive and preserve folk music with this podcast. The music featured is a variety of traditional folk songs from Ireland, Scotland, and occasional American folk songs and original songs, plus, commentaries and news occasional news.

Interesting idea but as of yet has no RSS feed.

What is it?

A website for Irish people to contribute to by sharing their views on any number of topics which interest/effect them.

I was recently pointed to the Guardians Soulmates website and informed that they have added the option for singles to record a voice clip for people to listen to them as they read through their profile. This is a great addition, but doesn’t include any RSS feeds.

The problem with these and other sites is in the cost. They may say:

Becoming a member is quick, easy and free.

But what they really mean is “Sign-up, fill out 5 pages of a profile as detailed as possible, receive email confirmation, log-in and realise you need to pay-up to send anyone a message… rates start at nearly £17 for just one month, a year costs a massive £95 pounds, the Irish sites aren’t much better value.

Podato is free and will remain so, why pay to meet someone (that’s illegal in the real world). Just give ‘Podato A Go’ and see where you can go from there… for free.

Podifier is an excellent application that automates the creation of an RSS feed, the enclosing of one or more MP3 files, edting of ID3 tags and the ftp application to upload them to a server.

A very handy all-in-one podcast upload system available for download here.

This blog began back in November which seems a really long time ago, in this time many Irish people (around 6) have gone about producing a podcast. Many people have e-mailed with some amazing ideas, future ideas and also people wondering how they can turn their radio stations into podcasts.

Now I see a chance of creating a weekly podcast of recordings, clips about all sorts of topics week, all placed together, edited and uploaded. It’s really easy to record items (mobile phone, minidisc or via computer). I have 100 MB of webspace over at eircom.net, so that could host between 7-14 shows (depending on the length). Once it reaches its max capacity I can upload them to gmail for archive purposes.

Podbus is a new service allowing people to sign-up and receive 300MB of storage and an automated RSS feed (much like what dircaster achieves) for $4 a month. This basically means you can upload 15 shows with a length of 20 minutes. For an extra $2 you can host a website with php enabled.

I’ll recap on podlots service to be fair - They offer 150MB with unlimited bandwidth for $5 month, or if you are a podcast addict you can get 1000MB of storage costing $15 a month, this allows you to host up to 15 domains and have unlimited e-mail addresses. They also offer php support if you want to create a website with added features like cgi, perl and python.

My advice would be to sign up for the basic package and host your site/blog on blogsome for free and link to the podcasts from there.

Podkissed: Allow easy management of podcasts to mobile.

Podsafe: Registered late last year, will maybe have a database of usable content for podcasts.

PodcastAds: Dates all the way back to November. Is it now too late for this idea as podshow is aiming to push the same idea?

Podbat: All round tool, management system for podcasts, show notes and a podcatcher.

Podglo: Sounds interesting, but not fully sure what it will offer.

Odeo: Currently in beta, most people very keen to use this site.

Podscope looks for podcasts and creates an index against every word, thereby making the contents searchable. The user can search on a term, generate a list of results ranked by a variety of methods to find the most relevant podcast and click to play or click to download.

You can enter your email to get an announcement once it launches and you can also submit your RSS feed for crawling. This service should be up and running by the end of the month.

Recently Adam Curry launched podshow.com which he is aiming to get people involved so they can start making money from their podcasts.

Anywho I got around 18 minutes of the show, but at this stage I began to worry because the clown was looking for people from the audience to come on stage. So I quickly untangled the microphone from the miniisc and placed it firmly back in my pocket, so yes you guessed it I was picked out as my parents picked a ring-side seat. He gabbed three other males and a female, he enacted playing an instrument which we had to step into the spotlight and copy. So it comes to my turn and he starts playing the air guitar. So yep I had to stand in the arena jumping up and down playing with an invisible quitar. The others had to play the sax, the drums, one guy prending to preform in a microphone and the female got the chance to dance.

So once we all had our minute in the spotlight he gave us all a blow up instrument and gave the lead singer a funny outfit, so there I was going through the motions when he comes over and pushes me over so I was lying flat wiggling me legs in the air while playing the guitar. It was great fun actually playing along.

3.) Take a quiet pub in Ireland hook in a MMV-100 into the scart connection. Now once you stay within 10 meters of the TV you can broadcast your podcast.

How it works: you send an image by MMS to yourword@grafedia.net. You publicise it by writing the word you choose anywhere in the real world in blue with an underline (just like a hyperlink). The person sees it on a street corner gets out their mobile and sends an MMS to theword@grafedia.net. To anyone else it may be graffiti put to people in the know it’s a link into a wider community.

Example: Lets say you take a picture at 4am of your friend lying outside a church. You take the picture and send it to holygirl@grafedia.net. The next day you write holygirl@grafedia.net on notice boards, on printouts, on street corners etc People take notice and can get the picture by sending a blank MMS to holygirl@grafedia.net. If they do this the image is sent to their mobile phone. This service also works from your computer where you send a blank email to holygirl@grafedia.net.

So let us relate this to Podato.com, the single person can send in their recordings as usual, we then get their name and make a email like emma@grafedia.net, we/she can add the link to where ever possible for people to see. The single guy can see this and use his mobile on the spot to send an MMS to emma@grafedia.net and is soon sent her recording to his mobile and no data is swapped between the two people.

Test it out - Send a blank email to podato@grafedia.net and see what happens.

Update - The RSS feed does not support enclosures so podcatching will not work. I would generate a url from mfeeds but that service is currently down.

Nearly half of the visitors are using Window XP, 23% are still using ‘98 like myself, 15% using 2000, just 9% are using a Mac and 6% arriving from Nokia Phones.

Also to my excitement over 60% of arrivals are using Firefox, with IE 6 making up 26% and 1.2% of people are still using IE 5. Opera users accounted for 6% with Mac Safari coming in at 5%.

So I signed up for the trial run (5 days) to compare it to Slapcast and LibSyn. At the sign up page you are greeted with the contact details which is always a good sign, especially when you can get in contact via mobile, IM and Skype, so if you have any problems they are ready to assist you. Once I completed the simple form I was emailed the following:

Thank you for trying podlot.com. Our server has been configured for your new account. Once the DNS information propagates to your ISP’s servers you will be able to begin posting your files; this usually takes 2 hours. Your free trial will begin at 8:00am the day following DNS verification and an email will be sent to you at that time.

To my surprise this service offers ftp access, so you can login with the details provided and design your website and easily transfer your podcasts over. I was also given my new address that would be accessible within 2 hours.

So that was that, I received another email later in the night:

So within a few hours I now have a five-day trial allowing me ftp access to irishpodcast.podlot.com.

Podlot only accepts money via paypal meaning if you have a tip jar on your site you may easily afford this service and use it as a podhost.

But the biggest difference to the site was the inclusion of an advert for podshow.com, I clicked and was greeted with a heading saying “Making Podcasting Better”. What will this site be? Well it’s part of a group venture between Ron Bloom and Adam Curry as part of BoKu Communications (but more about that soon). The ideas is to get advertisers involved (much like what podcastAds was set up for) and give them placement in podcast shows, this is called targetcasting. Other areas covered are an information centre/application to help podcasters get off the ground and to help you make money from your podcast. For listeners this probably will just be details of how they can listen to podcasts and how to subscribe to shows, not only this but they may even have a pod player ready for distribution (see the bottom segment of the site for more details). Also if interested you can sign up to be informed of the latest news. You can also listen to details about PodShow from Adam Curry from the pod player.

These two sites now form the bases for bokucom a company set up with the following goal:

With so many Irish people now turning to the web in search of a partner, there is now a way to include podcasting in this process.

How you may well ask, the answer is simple by the use of their mobile phone. People can attach their voice clips in an MMS/Email message and send it to podato@gmail.com, it is then manually converted to MP3 (the problem with mobile phones is that they record in .amr) but while converting it gives us the chance to check the content, change the ID tags, and begin the blog entry where the MP3 file will be placed (add optional advert e.g. visit poddate website at the end).

The website is currently at podato.com, users can subscribe to three different feeds, one for each sex or if they want they can listen to both sexes. If people don’t have MP Players they can just listen to the content on the website. Now the blog comes in handy at this stage, it allows people to give feedback on the voice (podclip) they have just heard: either asking for more information or wanting to get in contact with the person via email etc. a listener may even send a podclip aimed at the person they have just heard.

Unlike many dating websites there are no profiles so everyone starts on an even playing field, the problem with dating sites is that viewers look at the content and judge in fives seconds that this person is out of the question or if they have a picture this can have the same effect.

With these podclips people can feel secure and sell themselves at the same time. They needn’t feel embarrassed as no one will know them (they can make up a nickname when they start).

Also subscribe to the feed on the site so your can listen to single guys/girls on your way to work!

The students sat down along the left hand side with Bernie asking questions from the right, the microphone stayed closer to the students because they had a quieter voice and Bernie is used to lecturing and his voice carries well. I used my iPod ear buds to listen in during the recordings, I would advise people to use larger headphones but the location was so quiet I felt the need not to.

The students had already designed images to coincide with what food they ate for St. Patrick’s Day. Only 3 out of the 14 have typical Irish Meals. But while recording them speak about the food they ate I learned that most people eat out for St. Patrick’s Day which is unheard of in this household.

The students also read a chapter of Blink by Malcolm Gladwell so during the recording session they were asked by Bernie about their thoughts on the book.

The first student to enter was Siobhan Scarlett who made some great images in Adobe Photoshop. She talked about her ideas and how she documented items for her portfolio work, along with her thoughts on the week long programme and why she choose her Patrick’s Day food.

The next two students to arrive in were Ronan and Christina. They had read an item relating to Kenna and how people judged him on first appearance and didn’t give him much chance even on the radio. They also talked about the food they most enjoyed to eat on St. Patrick’s Day.

Finally Paddy Murphy and Amy were next in the hot seat. They talked also about first impressions relating to the college. They also talked about and why they eat pizza and SuperMacs for lunch.

Now it is stored on your computer.

The file will now download to the specified location. Once the download is complete, click close. Clicking open with give you an error from your media player.

Next step is to download the following zip file, install it on your system, once you click on it to open, you will see four major options, the first one AMR to WAVE is the one you need to click. You will now be shown to following screen:

You will be asked to browse your directory and file the amr file. You will now see the output file as being wav. Now Click the convert now button, this screen will come into view:

Now it will convert the file right in front of you using MDOS. This process can vary depending on the file size.

Once completed this screen will appear, showing the time it took and the finish button for you to click. Now when you look in your directory you will see the newly converted WAV along with the orignal AMR file. You can now test it out in real player to see what it sounds like. The next step is to convert the wav file to MP3.

To do this you will need to install Piver Past Wav, which is free and allows for unlimited conversions unlike some others I have tried. Once you open the program you will see the following:

Click browse as select your wav file, finally hit convert. In a few short seconds you will have a MP3 ready to upload and make available as a Podcast. Now when you look in your directory you will see three files, the orignal amr, the wav (which can be use to edit the file if need be) and finally the MP3 file. Now you can upload your file and make it available as a podcast.

I think I’ve finally convinced a friend of mine to start his own podcast, one which I believe will offer a very valuable service to a specific subsection of the community. Stay tuned….

But if TI is to get more students each year it needs to attack the right market just like other colleges. Each evening back then I would usually tune into 2FM and stick with it throughout the night. Then along came Beat FM and I soon switched (to a more local show, bigger chance of being heard).

The only radio I hear now is when the radio is on in the background while I’m having my daily meals.

I choose not to listen to radio, even when I am sitting in front on my computer (the room has no TV), I never turn on the radio, not even to hear the chart run down. Podcasting covers all these topics for me, although it’s not yet localised to my situation, it soon will be (give or take a few months). So if Podcasting really does catch on and I’m positive it will (thanks to the amount of MP3 Players that people now have). So wouldn’t it be worth placing little adverts in podcasts to extend your reach. You never know who may be listening.

I can safely say that this is the first bbpress forum dedicated to Podcasting. It’s nice to have it up and running and to know that it will hopefully be a great resource for Irish people especially, to come and post and interact with other podcast enthusiasts. So why not pop over and help the Irish Podforum grow.

You can click the MP3 file and get the enclosure tag code if you want to use your own RSS feed. There is functionality to click the id3 tags and enter your title, album and so forth along with an image.

This is a useful tool for podcasting, once someone posts a podcast they could enter the shownotes in the blog post or even place it on a separate feed. People could play a podcast and enter the rss2wap address on their mobile to view what’s coming up on today’s show. This would come in handy if it was a 40 minute show and you need to know what appears and when.

Once we get a couple of shows out featuring the above items, we may offer each one as a seperate feed for people to subscribe to.

Welcome to podcasting, the medium that promises a future where anyone can make radio, instead of just listen to it. The biggest podcast audiences now number in the mere tens of thousands. Yet real radio, the kind with bona fide mass audiences, is starting to use the technology to make its shows available for download.

Even if the usage is high we could have a gmail account set up especially for these people to send it to so listeners can log-in and download it. This means they needn’t worry about the storage space issue.

This is a great free application for people who have just heard about podcasting from various sources and want to start a show of their own. All you need to do is download the program, insert your microphone and talk about whatever topic you feel passionate about.

Once downloaded open it up and click on File > New Podcast and now you just have to enter the show name, author, keywords and pick a folder for where your saved podcasts go to. Once completed click the microphone icon and start talking. When you start you can type your show notes in the left hand column which will be saved as your showname.txt. This is a great add-on and will allow others to view what’s on your show before they decide to listen.

Once you are finished recording your show click the icon the right of the microphone, you can now listen to the content by clicking the silver disc with the green arrow around it. Now once you are happy with the recording hit the floppy disc icon and navigate to the folder you saved it in. Now all you have to do is upload it and point to it from your website.

Interested in podcasting? Ever try to do it? Podcasting is not trivial - it’s actually quite hard. Or at least it was. Podcast Wizard, new from Paramagnus, takes the pain out of podcasting. Simply create, publish, and promote.

To solve this maybe podcasters could have an alternative feed with AAC as the file enclosure. AAC audio files support bookmarks, so if you stop listening you will be able to continue where you left off upon re-access.

Many popular podcatchers support MP3 to AAC file conversion. Having this alternate feed allows the subscriber to choose which file format they prefer if they have an iPod.

During one session she asked me if I read many books, I was on the spot and couldn’t think of any recent ones that I had read. The Famous Five flew out of my mouth, she then asked me to name out the leading characters. They could have been Tom, Dick and Harry for all I knew. I remember naming out common names like John, Mary and Seamus, thankfully she said them out soon afterwards and I left with my head down ashamed of lying to her.

Nowadays many more children are missing out on a good read because of the time they spend in front of the Television. Thankfully books like Harry Potter and A Series of Unfortunate Events are grabbing children away from the TV and into their own world of imagination.

Over the past year there has been a massive increase with children having MP3 players particularly an iPod, many of which who own them are between 10 and 12 years old.

What would be great to see happen is for a parents council of a particular school getting together with parents of pupils and try to get children listening to spoken content instead of music all the time. The parents could get together and decide upon a children’s book and read it aloud while recording. Each adult is given a character to read out and one person acts as the narrator. Once completed the children can download it to their MP3 player and listen to the finished piece either with their friends or alone. Allowing them to use their imagination while they listen to the content.

Back to the recording/editing status. I am currently working on Podcast 0506 with technical director Mike Kiely. Most of Friday was spent in college, more specifically between the AV lab and the Sound Studio. From 10am until just after 3pm we worked on getting all the sound files together so we could make adjustments and get them to sound in tandem.

Firstly we tested each track in SoundForge to see what they actually sounded like. On Tuesday I had all the tracks editing down (in SoundForge) as best I could, unfortunately as I found out the default for Soundforge is to save file as .MP3 so once I had them on disc I opened them on screen, Mike needed to convert the sample rate of each track so they sounded on the same level, we located this thanks to google. We entered the sound studio and opened Pro Tools on the Mac, now he needed to grab the tracks from my CD and convert them back to .wav; I had three CDs with me, the originals, the edited versions and the intro/outro segments. I hadn’t labelled the CDs properly so this held us up as I gave him the wrong CD to convert (Note to self: Use a black marker). During this time Mike found that the Ellen MacArthur piece was in Mono and all other clips were Stereo. So to overcome this difference he copied the file and pasted it into a left and right output.

Now once we had all .wav files on a USB storage card we could save them onto the Mac and get ready to get our show together. Mike gave me a demonstration on how to use the ProTools which in the end looked simple to use. I have never had any experience with Macs before so that was an experience in itself. ProTools has a nice layout to understand and follow, we laid out the segments on two different parts, one for the interviews and the one below was for the introductions and outros. We made a quick outline of where the content would appear along with the intros and iteming following to the next section.

Problems with the recordings:

Ellen MacAther: Sound quality was good except it was in mono which set us back a bit on productivity. Maeve Connolly: Segment was just 20 seconds long but involved an awful hissing noise due to the surroundings or a connection lose, this was completely blocked out by using the dehisser option under audiostudio. Feargal McKay: Two separate recordings sounded okay, one of them was louder than the other so we used the limiter to quieten it down. Eamon Kearns: This was a phone interview which actually was of great quality but we wanted to give a more realistic sound, so people actually knew it was recorded over mobile phone so we used the limiter.

I spent just over an hour by myself getting to know ProTools and figuring out where each action was which was a very valuable experience, I could easily move the files around and put them in the order which I preferred.

I opened the Nokia Communicator on the desk which was the central feature of the room. I just had to hit the ‘my own’ button while I was on the main menu followed by record. Once the 30 minute session had ended I just had to click stop > menu and scroll down to save as and enter the file name. To take out the 512MB memory card I had to open the mobile from the back and pop it out. I later used the Memorex card reader to upload to my college PC, the computer recognised it but it had no data. After thinking everything was deleted it was pointed out to me that the card was upside down, not very clear from the device as to what way to insert it.

The sound clips were in amr format meaning I needed to use a simple converter program and change the four files to wav so I could listen to the sound quality. I tried uploading them to the xdrive but the college computers had problems uploaded such large files. When I got home Tuesday I tried from home, I selected the file to upload, it was uploading but gave no feedback as to if it was successful, unfortunately it never got there, so today at 7pm tonight I uploaded each one again. I know one of them appears on xdrive so at the moment I have just logged in to xdrive and I’m still waiting over 5 minutes to view my uploads to see if the rest made it.

CD with magazine which features the best podcasts on it for newcomers to try out in their car. Readers write in with their problems; answered by podcasters themselves. People can send in an MMS of their set up.

The can start with a free blog either at blogger.com or on live journal. Or if they have some web experience go to dhost and set up a free account with ftp access. After this they can decide to install movable type, mambo or my favourite wordpress, because it has ftp access you can upload images and mp3 files as it has 100MB of space. You could set up multiple accounts it you’re going to have a lot of shows.

Or another solution although slower would be to email your mp3 files to submit@openpodcast.org and wait to see your feed pop up in the archives section and link to it from your blog. Although this will be slow if someone wants to download it, but if you get subscribers they won’t notice as much.

Status: Is the main menu which shows your podcast RSS feeds, an area to add your feed and buttons to select or remove and check for new podcasts.

Sceduler: Where you can select when to check for new podcasts at whatever time you want to.

Preferences: General options appear here, such as do you want to hide iPodder at start up and select which folder to download podcasts to.

Info: Gives details on the programmers and an area to donate money.

Log: gives details when you’re downloading podcasts.

Go to the advanced editing mode. Scroll down to custom fields and place enclosure in the key section followed by the link to your video in the value text box. Now write your post and hit post.

So I opened Nimiq, selected my RSS feed and hit ‘download now’. To my surprise it downloaded the video in five seconds It was placed in my Nimiq folder ready to view. The default opening is for Quick Time. The phone can record for 50 seconds but doing so means you are unable to send it, so the recording time for this is just 13 seconds.

Which focused on “What are you doing for your project”, we all had 2/3 minutes to jot down the main points of our project, inturn each Mutlimedia student sat down directly in front of me to speak about their projects. Each voice level was different from the last one so I needed to be on hand with the mobile moving it closer/futher from their mouth.

Once each item had be recorded as individual soundclips we exported them to a labtop. Unfortunately we discovered that the recording turn out to be .amr and not mp3 as we thought. This handed us a large problem which not even google could solve. We looked everywhere even purchased the latest Real Player to see if it could at least play it, this wasn’t the case, but luckily Michael Kiely (Video and Sound Expert) was on hand and solved the problem by sending a zip file of a program which allowed us to convert it to .wav. We placed each seperate clip in Soundforge and copied and pasted each one together. I edited down blank noise, gaps in sentances and other noises.

Recording items is very quick and simple. Just gather a group around a table and shift the record bar to the right and begin your podcast. Once completed just hit the square stop button. If your holding the recording in your hand at this stage you should begin to hear it viabrate while it saves. To upload this .wav file connect your cable to your laptop and use any sound program e.g Soundforge.

1. Don’t understand podcasting and want to see whats out there.
2. Want to listen to the show without downloading it to their computer.
3. Want to hear content as live as possible.
4. Want to sample a lot of shows without having to subscribe and download a lot of MP3s.
5. Don’t have the bandwidth to download a lot of shows (dial-up users).

We are a bunch of music lovers who have access to great, mostly independent music that you probably haven’t heard of (yet). We provide a fresh alternative to the radio you may be used to. It is all 100% legal and safe to download. Each AMP member has his or her own unique podcast show, but we all share a passion for getting great new music heard, and we believe AMP helps everyone: music listeners, bands and labels, podcasters, and podcast service providers (PSPs).

It has already got seven members who are dedicated to playing podsafe music for people to listen to. Talking about podsafe, there has been a lot of talk about placing music in your podcast and if it’s legal. On Adam Currys show recently he talked about the ASCAP Internet license which features information on how you can:

Play song “samples” or excerpts that are not more than 60 seconds in duration.

Podsafe.com has been registered and will probably be location for Artists to place their music so people had place them in their show and not worry about the legalities of it all.

Now you need to test your voice (a) to see what you sound like and (b) to set the volume to the right level. If the rectangles are at around 80% it’s going to be good quality. If the speaker has a quiet voice pump up the volume by pushing the play button upwards to nearer 30 (the maximum).

Firstly to start recording you need to purchase some recordable minidiscs (you can get 10 for €20 which come in nice coloured coded discs, each one has a max of 80 minutes recording time).

Getting to know your Minidisc

To turn on the device flip it over to its back and slide the switch to the on position. You will also notice a hold switch which is useful when you have it resting in your pocket. The right hand side of the device has the vital slots which will be mostly used when podcasting (recording). The black slot is the line in option commonly used when listening to your recordings, but this slot is also used for when you want to upload tracks to your computer. The red slot is used to connect your microphone or external microphone depending on the circumstances of your usage. Now to the front of the device; this is where the recording, playing and stopping buttons are. Firstly you will notice the record slider with the red dot above it. Next to this is the group button followed by the pause and stop buttons. Directly above it is a multi-functional button with a play sign on it. It’s quite small and fiddly to use so be careful if you’re listening through a long recording and accidentally hit the button to >>| (next track). It has five functions The main one is play, all you have to do is push the button in. Next is the volume, you need to hit the button upwards to increase the volume and downwards to decrease it. To flip back a track move it to the left and slide it to the right if you want to move on to another track.

To the left on this button is the main interface screen (more about this further on). On the left side of the minidisc is the main way of navigating through your tracks. It is also multi-functional, one use being a scroll menu and the other is as the enter button. Once you turn on the device you will need to also push in the enter button. This will bring up the menu of the device. Edit and Display will be in view. To see the rest of the options, just scroll down using the wheel to the left. Now turn off the device and slide the open switch to the right and insert your disc. Be sure to look at your minidisc to see where the “Insert This Card” in written, now slide it in until it clicks and slam down the top. Now turn it back on, you should be seeing 00:00. Now you are ready to start recording.

Recording from your Minidisc

Now once you have some content ready or a group of people around you can start recording on this device. Connect your microphone jack to the red slot and switch it on. Now gather you friends together or if it’s just yourself position the microphone between 2/5 inches away from your mouth.

Getting the best quality

1. Slide record to the left. It will make a sound to let you know its recording.

2. You will see the track number at the top: 001 with REC written beside it followed by a disc spinning around. The time will appear in the middle (e.g. 00:25). The most important part to watch out for is the two rectangles which appear at the bottom. This is the sound level and moves according to the sound which it is receiving, the higher the better.

3. Now you need to test your voice (a) to see what you sound like and (b) to set the volume to the right level. If the rectangles are at around 80% it’s going to be good quality. If the speaker has a quiet voice pump up the volume by pushing the play button upwards to nearer 30 (the maximum).

4. Now stop/pause the recording and gather yourself for the real thing.

5. Count yourself in from three (this leaves space – recordings sound bad if they just start).

6. Once recording is complete leave it on for another few seconds before hitting the stop button.

7. Now hit stop you will see Data save followed by TOC Edit (this means its saving it to the disc so be sure not to press any buttons while this is in progress as you will probably lose the content.

8. It will say end 001 followed by the recording time available.

Uploading your file

1. Connect your mini-to-mini cable into the headphone jack of your minidisc.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the line or microphone input of your sound card.

3. Press record on your computer software.

4. Press play on your minidisc.

Whatever they decide to do they deserve it, they have kept us all entertained with their wacky and outlandish content. Most people decide too tune in at night time to suit its content. But me? I prefer to connect my iPod in the morning, get the latest show and listen to it on my way to college which is just about the length of their podcast. I find myself laughing for the most part out loud, something which I can’t control and I often get people looking back over my shoulder wondering am I right in the head. This content of their show is just perfect for podcasting, it’s just speech so no problems with copyrighted material, it contains the content that just cannot ever be heard on the radio, showing people why it really is an alternative to the radio. They can listen to content that suits them, there are no restrictions, you can say what you want when you want and if you offend someone so what? No one is in charge you have total freedom of the medium which is what Dawn and Drew do so well in their podcast.

Just after dinner three or four times each week, Dawn and Drew plop down in their Salvation Army-decorated living room and record 30 minutes of funny, inane and often racy husband-and-wife yakking — a show about nothing. But how they’re delivering the program worldwide is quite something.

At the moment Slapcast has a free trial which allows you to try it out and submit 3 free messages. Once you have tried it out and are happy with the service you can sign-up for just $5 (each month – unlimited bandwidth). It says you can go from sign-up to login in less than one minute.

Update: After logging in the my account I was pleasantly surprised at the set-up. It gave all the information about how to podcast either through email or phone, if you use phone they ask for the number you have dialled from which allows for identification. You can edit the title, artist and comment fields for your particular podcast. If you have an existing blog you can post the MP3 file to your blog also.

Another new website recently setup is Podcast World.

“MixCast Live’s going to allow a lot of people to get into this, produce high quality recordings, without having a whole lot of knowledge of how to do it.”

MixCast Live is now available on Pre-Release with a discount of $20 to make it just $39 (€30.34). MixCast Live really is podcasting for the People. All going to plan I will be getting my copy tomorrow and evaluating and testing it with a podcast.

For this to work for the whole community (e.g. subscribers through RSS) we will have to wait until Mobiles come with MP3 recorders that are affordable for everyone so they can be included in your feeds. When this happens it could be the first money making attempt to succeed from Podcasting. People can subscribe to your show which you record on the move on your mobile. They subscribe by topping up your mobile and you send them your latest podcasts for a month to their mobile. Another barrier which whas gone which helps the spread of mobile podcasting is that you can now send MMS messages from O2 to Meteor and visa versa, I’m not sure if Vodafone allows this at the moment.

Having just tried it out from my o2 Sony Ericsson (which allows for ten minutes of recording time) to my Meteor Motorola V300 the sound quality was clear to hear and of a good standard. If a podcast was to be a maximum of ten minutes people would get tried of holding their mobile to their ear and just listening to content. People don’t realise it as much when they are interacting with people over mobiles. So couldn’t there be and Bluetooth option that allows you to listen to podcasts. Just insert your headset, leave you mobile in your pocket and keep your hands free for the shopping bags.

After a 30-day trial period, your current subscription list will be locked. If you find that you like Podfeeder, you can purchase a subscription for only US$11.95 per year.

Firstly I’ll explain how to use the site, you will need to hit the create an account button, enter your name, email etc. Now download the application and login with your details. You will be issued with an email to welcome you into the fold. Once login is successful you will be able to change your settings which are: the location where they should downloaded to, your bandwidth limit (very useful if you’re using dial-up), once podcasts are downloaded you can choose between iTunes or Windows Media Player (Apple v Windows). You will now notice Bryan Bells new logo appear in your toolbar. To add podcasts you can either visit here or right click > podcasts > update collection. Now you can carry on with your daily work and wait for your podcasts to download or you can update them at any time.

Another site which I regularly visited was podfly.com, I remember back to when I emailed the owner to discuss what his site would be based on and which CMS he should use. In the end he installed Mambo which was something I had never heard about and wouldn’t be a choice for me even after seeing it. Podfly featured in many sites as a great place to find out “How to Podcast” in three easy steps. It was easy to understand but the problem was the way in which the content was displayed with messy links to navigate through it.

Podfly then decided to open up its site to allow for other podcast enthusiasts to contribute and add an article. It started off well with some great content from Gary Bibb and Kristopher Smith. Alas within a few months the content had dried up and it hasn’t been updated since the 3^th of January.

While these two were the main sites (along with ipodder.org) at the beginning of the evolution of Podcasting, the main site now is Podcast Alley who has over taken and features the main place for podcasters to interact with each other on the forum. People flock to it everyday either to check for new podcasters or to see if they had any feedback from their listeners.

But is Podcast Alley such a big deal? The majority of podcasters feature either a link or have it included in their podcast asking people to visit Podcast Alley and vote for them. I know feedback is a major part of podcasting and if you don’t get feedback what makes you carry on knowing you might not have listeners. But don’t most podcasters have blogs which allow for comments, if not they can always drop you an email (with optional MP3 attachment). Or maybe you have a j2 account or Skype where you could record and place these recordings in your podcasts.

Why do people feel they need to be rated on some website? Although this site is the main place to find podcasts at the moment and as pointed out in mobilepodcasts latest podcast it is the best for people new to podcasting to locate the top 10 most popular podcasts that they should subscribe to. But at the start of the show he was very upset to find a comment left on podcast alley which was as follows:

Not so great, I started listening to this podcast thinking it was about Treos, but was disappointed to find ramblings about everything but. I’d pass on this one and pick up the Wizards of Tech as they seem to talk about Treos more than this podcast.

He goes on to agree with my point of view saying:

Time to change? But then I saw it was signed by ’superdork’ and realized just how meaningless podcastalley.com is…

Podcast Alley is a site for people to view their mind whether they like or dislike your podcast. Not everyone is nicey nicey as Gary Bibb pointed out saying:

“Why in the hell is everyone in podcasting so damn nice to one another?”

To be a true podcaster we need to take on the advice and either do something about it or just forget about it and “podcast on”.

The top tabs are:

Directory: which is powered by iPodderX’s. Its a simple menu, just click on the category followed by the podcaster ad click the tab beside the find button to subscribe to it.

Personal Feeds: is where your selected feeds go, you can unsubscribe to them add any time by clicked the square box, it also features the preview and download now button which always comes in handy if you are bored and want to listen to some few podcasts.

Downloads: This is the feedback area with the status bar showing how which it has downloaded to, once download has completed you can easily clear the contents.

Log: Is where you can follow how the downloading is going and if any podcasts were un-able to be downloaded.

Settings: This is a very useful area. you can decide which media played they will play on, where the downloads will take place and you can also import your favourite podcasts from iPodder.

Help: This area is very detailed and offers all the help you need if you come across a problem with the help of diagrams.

Overall this is a very good podcatching, easy for beginners but I’m still sticking with Nimiq.

Update: I recorded a quick 20 second snippet on my Motorola v300 and sent it to my Irishfree account, it remained in .amr so I needed to locate a zip file which I had earlier used on another podcast. Luckily I located it and converted it in seconds. To progress with this I will need to delete some applications and images to increase its recording time.

Liam, thanks for the kind note. I’m about to launch into the podcasting space myself, so I’m happy to help and learn. It is extremely exciting to hear about how you all are spreading Free Culture. Have you seen the Free Culture movement (not related to me) started by students at Swarthmore (http://freeculture.org)? Also, it would be great if you used CC music in your podcast — to again, reinforce the point you make in the beginning of your post.

Now people can choose to either pay for songs from iTunes or get free content on their MP3 players (Podcasts). Podcasting will get many artists noticed in the future (just like Bradsucks.net) who gets played in many Podcasts – even mine once it gets underway. Podcasting is free to listen to, if you don’t like it you can stop listening and subscribe to another. Many people are now looking at ways to make money from podcasting which could mean having to pay to listen to your favourite shows. This was an idea discussed by Dawn and Drew who already have a sponsored advert from msmobiles.com and appears at the end of the show so it doesn’t get it the way. Adverts in Podcasts can work if they are done in a fun way much like what Dawn and Drew do: you get the message but are entertained at the same time.

We need some company to build a MP3 player dedicated to Podcasting (a great market ploy to get new podcast enthusiasts thinking: “Do I need one of these to listen to podcasts?”) The publicity would help podcasting grow and also warn people that if someone is laughing out loud it doesn’t mean they are mental.

It’s short (between 2-10 minutes); you get to listen to a wide variety of topics some of which you would never have subscribed to. It’s a little taster and if you like a show just listen out for the web address and jot it down in your mobile for when you get home.

In this case we can empty out the trash and subscribe to what we like the sound of, Podcasting needs to be personal (just like Adam Curry and Armando and Sara) who let us into their world while they podcast. In this way you get a bearing of what they are about and what makes them tick.

Unfortunately some major podcasters [Engadget and Radio Whore] have stopped for reasons unknown (I just wonder if they were getting enough listeners), which is a shame as I enjoyed listening to both. That’s the problem Adam Curry would never have seen come through: too many people podcasting for our attention.

Although it mostly features promotions, it does have some great content, if you subscribe you’re sure get a lucky dip not knowing what you’re about to listen to on your MP3.

Contribue - will be a place for Irish people to have their say and feature on the show with their comments/opinions or even chat about one of the themes.

Podcasting Explained - will be very useful to people who have just heard about podcasting, it will feature terms such as Podcatching and Podmedia. Users can also contribute to this list.

Podcaster - will be the home home page for all of the above and will feature snippets from each of these and also some fresh podcasting news.

Well his problem was when he wanted to listen he needed to download each show especially Adam Curry which would take about 5-10 minutes a time and that’s just for one podcast. And once he downloaded and listened to it he then needed to locate the MP3 and delete it and complete the process again and again each day.

The answer finally came to him recently:

Prior to PodcastMania.com, in order to fully enjoy what podcasting was all about, you would have needed to download special software to “tune in” to these podcasts. I personally had over a gig of podcasts, in several directories on my hard drive and two 3rd party applications installed to gather and play podcasts. I was constantly downloading files, building playlists, deleting files….there had to be a better way! Enter PodCast Mania, the one stop, click and listen portal for listening to PodCasts while you’re tied to your desk! No third party apps, no file management, no clutter on your hard drive, just click and listen. Aaahhhhh….that’s more like it!

The icons are nice, really clear, but the clean up icon is a correct sign, without the text I’d be wondering what it would do. It has a very useful Opml browser added to it, so you can scroll through the iPodder directory and select a feed from any category.

Under tools > options you can change the folder where the podcasts are sent to and schedule when downloads occur.

We have some excellent Irish bloggers which appear world-wide; why not have some excellent Irish podcasters?

How about an Irish couple who are more outlandish than Dawn and Drew? How about a drunkcast - instead of ringing your ex after a night out why not get out your mobile and record a live show in abrakebabra as you wait for a soggy kebab (that will be dropped on the footpath as soon as you get out).

I’m already subscribed to Eirpod who at the moment is just getting to grips with recording and has yet another listener.

• Youth Events
• Music (getting bands noticed in the South East)
• Sports results (students reporting live from events)
• Organise Group Get Togethers

Also wouldn’t it be great to get a personal view of an event/location. For example with CAO forms due soon, surely wouldn’t secondary level schools like to know what Tipperary Institute is really like, what the courses involve, what lecturers are like, how’s the food, facilities and what’s the night life like.

The best source of advertising isn’t through television, magazines or the radio it’s by ‘word of mouth’ which is why Podcasting (only in it’s 4th month) has been so successful, you only have to look at sites like podcast alley or iPodderX to realise how many people are involved without them being told about this from other sources.

A podcast can be recorded by anyone of any age with only a little knowledge of information which is available on this site. All you need is a microphone/voice recorder, something to talk about, a computer (optional) and if you want to polish your podcast use a free sound program like audacity. Now once uploaded write a blog entry and place a link to your MP3 file, your blog should automatically add an enclosure to the rss file. With this RSS file people can subscribe to your show using free applications such as iPodder or iPodderX.

To listen you a podcast (podcatch) just go to audio.weblogs or the ipodder directory and get the RSS feed from their site, all content is free to listen to with most if not all playing non IRAA music such as Brad Sucks.

Another great service useful to podcasters is J2, this company allows you to sign up for free, get a number assigned to you that can allow listeners to ring you and leave comments about your podcast. The key item is that once recording it emails it to you in MP3 format so you can easily insert them into your own show.

Take my Sony Ericsoon T630 mobile, a podcast device? With a bit of work it can be your ‘on the move recording device’. Firstly enter the main menu, navigate to ‘pictures and sounds’ and scroll down to record sound, once you click it records so be ready. It records a maximum of ten minutes and stops, if you’re recording is less than that just click stop. The recording will stop and be saved in my sounds. It will be a default value of ‘Recording’. Now hit more > send > as picture msg > (click edit if you want to add text - could be show notes or links to websites). Finally hit more > send > followed by where your sending it to e.g. e-mail address and enter your e-mail followed by send.

At this point your podcast isn’t much use in your inbox unless your parent/friends have your password. What you need to do before you leave is to set up a gmail account or any other mail service with POP. If you have a blog such as Wordpress you can login > options > writing and enter your details such as your login name and password. Now you can enter your gmail in the recipients list on your mobile as you send the podcast.

This means you can podcast from any special event or any location right there and then allowing your listeners to be kept up to date. This makes your podcast so much closer to ‘Almost Live’.

Subscribe to the feed and view the production notes.

You could also record a podcast while on your holiday (a perspective from a tourist) and upload it to the website through GPRS or get to an Internet Cafe. This means a database should fill up for the most popular locations, best places to visit and areas to stay away from.

This item was ideal for this recording. Each of us were sitting and standing around a table so sound needed to be heard from a long distace. We placed the Microphone in the center of the table, connected it to the Mini Disc Recorder and began talking. It picked up the sound very well and has a useful connection wire of 60cm which can allow alot of people to Podcast in one room.

You should now see an iPodder icon on your desktop. When you double click it a mini icon will appear on your bottom toolbar. Now right-click the icon and choose options.

Application:

You will notice that you are subscribed to The Daily Source Code, Evil Genius Chronicles and The Gilmore Gang. If you want to try them out leave the box ticked, but if they don’t take your fancy just deselect them.

On the top left hand corner you can specify were your podcasts should download to. The default is set to C:\FeedDownload but may be best to change it to Podcasts to avoid any confusion. You can change to Refresh time from 30 minutes to as far as 1000 minutes, this time period may depend on the amount of Podcasts you are subscribed to. If you are only subscribed to one or two it may be best to leave a long refresh time.

Now to the main part of the application, the RSS Feed submission area. This is very simple process indeed, just travel to your favourite Podcaster site and click on their syndication feed and copy/paste it into this area and click “add feed”.

It will appear shortly in the box below along with the Feed name and the RSS location. The last option is to manually check for new podcasts by pressing the retrieve now button.

You don’t have a display and thus can’t easily choose which mp3 to play, so if life really “is random”, why not load it up with your favorite podcasts.

But with Podcasts you only want to hear a Podcast once and get rid of it. No one wants to listen to a 40 minute show or even a one minute show more than once. You know you’re going to be listening to Podcasts which you are subscribed to and listen to regulary.

I opened the Nokia Communicator on the desk which was the central feature of the room. I just had to hit the ‘my own’ button while I was on the main menu followed by record. Once the 30 minute session had ended I just had to click stop > menu and scroll down to save as and enter the file name. To take out the 512MB memory card I had to open the mobile from the back and pop it out. I later used the Memorex card reader to upload to my college PC, the computer recognised it but it had no data. After thinking everything was deleted it was pointed out to me that the card was upside down, not very clear from the device as to what way to insert it.

The sound clips were in amr format meaning I needed to use a simple converter program and change the four files to wav so I could listen to the sound quality. I tried uploading them to the xdrive but the college computers had problems uploaded such large files. When I got home Tuesday I tried from home, I selected the file to upload, it was uploading but gave no feedback as to if it was successful, unfortunately it never got there, so today at 7pm tonight I uploaded each one again. I know one of them appears on xdrive so at the moment I have just logged in to xdrive and I’m still waiting over 5 minutes to view my uploads to see if the rest made it.

This makes Podcasting so easy to record. To turn on the device slide the switch on the left hand side upwards. The main menu will appear with all available programs. In the bottom left hand corner touch the Voice Rec icon. The voice recorder application will now appear. Now when you’re ready to record touch the rec button and away you go. Once finished press stop and wait for it to save. You can now take out the Memory Stick and insert into our computer.

It will be available in 512 MB and 1 GB versions, the iPod shuffle is sized at 3.3″ x 1″ x 0.3″ and .78 oz.

This will be a massive hit even though people can’t control what songs they listen to, which makes it all the more fun. The suggested retail prices are $99 USD (512 MB) and $149 USD (1 GB).

woah, our 50th show! pretty wild. i wasn’t sure how many shows we’d get to before we would hang our hats, but the response is still so overwhelmingling positive, that i’m sure we’ll do at least another 50. if this is your first time listening to our show… please be prepared for 2 people sitting around talking to each other as if you were in our living room. nothing super exciting. some people even say we suck and are a waste of bandwidth. but then some people say they love us and can’t wait to hear another episode. so judge for yourself. if you don’t like the show, we won’t hate you. but for those of you out there that really do enjoy dawn and i rambling about with each other, then i’m sure you’ll enjoy this episode…

This lets you receive a podcast from any page that has MP3s on it (or .movs, .torrents, etc). For example, you can “subscribe” to a band’s MP3 page or to a radio station’s archive. When they post new stuff you’ll get it automatically.

The main reason for pod cast to be so popular today is that people, yes your consumers. Customers wants to get content relevant to their interests, but I notice with some pod cast (like the popular dawn & drew show) is now being infiltrated by that age old model of shoving advertisement to listeners.

Adam Curry should seriously consider renaming his “show”. Why? Because it has nothing to do with source code, or with programming at all.

What sight or sound do you associate with Christmas in Ireland? What kind of gift would be most appropriate as a “gadget for her”? Fast-forward ahead to the year 2020. What sight or sound related to multimedia today might be considered a digital artefact in that future year.

Recording took place in the sound studio with 8 Multimedia students, for best sound quality we used the Sony mini disc recorder with the Sony Microphone attached along side it. This enabled us to sit/stand around the room and all to be heard at the same voice level, which helped me produce better sound quality. When recording I made sure to slide the mini disk record button to the left and listen for the feedback, recording now took place with the help of Thelma Cotter who introduced each topic followed by our opinions.

Once recording had finished I hit stop and felt it vibrant in my hand. I got out a laptop and connected it to the mini disc and opened Soundforge. A mini problem occurred here, there were other files on the mini disc and I never looked to see what numbers were our recent recordings so I disconnected the device and played each item, jotting down the number as I went along. Finally I had the details I needed now I hit record in Sounforge waited a few seconds and pressed play on the mini disc and left extra time at the end for sound editing purposes.

I edited out the blank some and some jumbled words which appeared. Now I copy/pasted each one into on big file and added my introduction to the podcast using text to speech technology and also created my outro with contact/comments details. Listen here.

The problem is would any podcast ever be so good that you re-listen to it? Take for instance a chat show on the radio (Beat FM record a talk show from 1.50 to 3.50 and is repeated again at 11.50 until 1.50) I must say I have listened to the show on a few occasions during the day time and again at night (when most radio stations are boring and play songs for people working late shifts).

But now that I get great Podcasts arriving straight to me, the on switch to the radio has now gathered dust. DSC takes me from college to home, DNDS takes me into the night, podcasts such as The Sports Pod, Reel Reviews and have recently tried Matthew Bischoff to make my night pass by with entertainment. Most podcasts now feature music (between 2/3 songs) so will this help podcasters to be re-listened to? Let us hope so. Comments on this please.

All you pay for is the download cost, no need for a computer. This would be ideal for students who love listening to the Dawn and Drew Show. This would mean you bypass using ipodder, ipodderX or dopplerradio, and get the content without subscribing. But how do you know when a show has updated you ask? Well you don’t want to be wasting credit ever hour looking through their site. To solve this all we need is a company to realise the potential of all of this and set up a text alert scheme. You could send the RSS file location to whatever number (costing 30cent max) and receive texts for every new show for the price of a normal text.

I wrote up a tutorial/primer for using bittorrent to distribute your podcast. If you’re concerned about bandwidth, this will be the way to go. With this particular method, you will NOT need to run a tracker and you can adjust the bandwidth you use locally by just adjusting the upload speed of the bittorrent client. I tested it out and downloaded a show through ipodder.

The same experience happened today from using the Sony Ericsson S700i without the handbook, we thought the phone was capable of recording in MP3 and transferring it over to a laptop. The exact same problem happened, it would only record in .amr format. We knew this wouldn’t be of the best quality to use so we googled for applications to convert them to MP3, only 5 results arrived back: forums with people asking the exact same question. Along came Michael Kiely with just what we needed a handy zip file that converted what we had to .wav, which as we all knew could be easily converted to MP3 for podcast use. Bernie opened each file in Quicktime and saved them as MP3 files. After a brief tutorial of Soundforge I quickly got down to work and copied each MP3 file in and deleted the beeps form the start and end of each recording.

The process just took about 20 minutes from recording to podcasting. Listen to the end result.

Which focused on “What are you doing for your project”, we all had 2/3 minutes to jot down the main points of our project, inturn each Mutlimedia student sat down directly in front of me to speak about their projects. Each voice level was different from the last one so I needed to be on hand with the mobile moving it closer/futher from their mouth.

Once each item had be recorded as individual soundclips we exported them to a labtop. Unfortunately we discovered that the recording turn out to be .amr and not mp3 as we thought. This handed us a large problem which not even google could solve. We looked everywhere even purchased the latest Real Player to see if it could at least play it, this wasn’t the case, but luckily Michael Kiely (Video and Sound Expert) was on hand and solved the problem by sending a zip file of a program which allowed us to convert it to .wav. We placed each seperate clip in Soundforge and copied and pasted each one together. I edited down blank noise, gaps in sentances and other noises.

It was then my task to save as mp3, burn to CD and upload to my web server, Dircaster automatically inserted it into an RSS file so subscribers could listen to the first ever ‘College Podcast’ relating to Multimedia Projects.

There’s more to come and things will sound better as we evolve. We are ensuring that one element of our creative development is the documentation of wireless podcasting. It’s important to have this skillset in your pocket if you’re caught out behind normal lines of support. That skillset also works well for deployed or embedded journalists.

I’m using it to talk about our Podmedia project from my perspective as a technologist interested in accessibility and a critic committed to narrating visual art to the blind.

This is a fantastic idea, most art we see is untouchable, except for the odd few exhibitions that allow for interaction. During these installations the blind person can get an understanding for shape, texture and interrupt the art for themselves. The trouble with masterpieces such as The Birth of Venus or The Tribute Money by Masaccio is that they will never know what they look like. It would be interesting to see how my sister (an art teacher) could describe vividly ‘Soft Construction with Boiled Beans’ (about The Spanish Civil War) by Salvador Dali or to explain any works by Piscasso and podcast them.

Podcasts are here, but are you listening? Podcasting Technology is growing every day, but if no one is listening, does it even matter?

Some are of excellent quality and could be considered radio standard but podcasting for me is about people sitting around and just chatting as seen with my show, Beercasting (set in a pub) and also the sports pod which can go on for over an hour.

Podcast Research

Takes the form of a blog and podcast that examines the podcasting phenomena and studies it with an academic eye. There are various themes the study is interested in such as whether it can be considered a serious medium as blogging has become, and whether commercialization (like it or not) has to happen before it can reach critical mass.

This podcast has very handy tips placed in one minute podcasts such as the one below:

Here is a tip that might save you some money. Next time you are out shopping and need to know the lowest price of an item. Whip out that cell phone and send a message to 46645. Enter the ISBN number in the subject line and send the message. In a few minutes, some of the lowest prices found on the web will be returned to you.

Podcasting is the latest Internet fad with the potential to shake up the way we listen to radio. Enthusiasts record their own home made shows, which can be downloaded on to portable players like an iPod. Zina Saro-Wiwa listens in.

What is the iPodder application?

iPodder is a media aggregator which automatically downloads podcasts to your computer or portable device based on a RSS feed, leaving you ‘one-click-away’ from latest media feeds. The whole process is done on it’s own, so you don’t have to select files, search for them or click links to download the media. All you do is specify some feeds and wait to get yourself the podcasts. All you have to do is decide what your going to listen.

You will be able to investigate new products and services, view demos, pick up literature, white papers and meet representatives from companies ranging from software to hardware .

Problems with click rate:

What’s dissapointing, so far, is that 75% of my visitors stay on the site for less than 5 seconds. So does that mean I have experienced podcasters stopping buy, or are the newbies just not liking what they see?

The idea is simple:

Put a bunch of people together, add some spirits, and conversation flows in every which direction (some great, others bizarre). In short, the best conversations form in the froth of a frosty mug. We’ve outlined some of the notes for how to do one here below.

Some basic guidelines need to be followed:

Topics automatically rotate when a new beer (wine, drink, etc.) is ordered. Anyone can speak at any time, the loudest one wins. Anything goes, there’s no filtering.

Always nice when people personally e-mail you even if it’s this short. But if he makes time for you, you make time for him. Just viewed the website, it looks like it has potential. Firstly it designates podcasts into regions, something much needed because all people find is podcasts from America (even when the BBC were visiting Adam Curry to do a feature on Podcasting, they said “Hello America” while he was podcasting). It is currently work in progress but will be sure to change in the upcoming days.

The site layout does continue throughtout the site, but is pretty simple with navigation placed at the top and uses the simple white background. The download page has links to dircaster (which creates enclosures automatically for you) and also a python script that uses rsslib to generate an RSS feed. You can also add your podcast or do it on behalf of someone else. Check out their OPML file of all their shows:
